Home Dialysis

Quality Improvement Activity (QIA) Overview

During calendar year 2019, all 18 ESRD Networks continue to focus on increasing home dialysis utilization in 30% of facilities located in the respective Network service areas. The Home Modality QIA is intended to promote early referral to home dialysis, assist patients and providers in addressing barriers identified throughout the referral process, and ultimately increase the number of ESRD patients utilizing home dialysis. CMS’ goal over the next five years is to move from the 2016 national average of 12% to 16% by 2023.

The 2019 goal of the QIA is to increase the number of patients utizlizing home dialysis by 2 percentage points over the natural trend for each participant facility. The natural trend was calculated by CMS via a 60 month look back at the number of patients who began utilizing home dialysis (numerator) over the number of prevalent patients (denominator).
