CKD resources for patients: what everyone should know about chronic kidney disease (CKD)

Chronic kidney disease, sometimes referred to as CKD, is damage to kidneys caused by conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and certain inherited disorder. Kidney disease tends to run in families.

Although there is no cure for kidney disaese, early detection of CKD offers the opportunity to delay worsening of kidney function by initiating treatment of underlying conditions. Detection is relatively easy and can be done with a urinalysis and simple blod test. Following the blood test, calculation of GFR (glomerular filtration rate) by laboratories or physicians can determine the level of damage that has occurred and guide physicians in the care they prescribe. Kidney disease can progress all the way to kidney failure, which requires either dialysis or a kidney transplant to maintain life.
